Abstract and its importance in Internships

This post is for all MBA finance students who are about to do a finance project and those who have already done Finance Project without knowing the significance of the project contents.

First of all let us know completely how a real project work process should proceed, as a MBA pursuing student the first step is you should apply for internships in different companies, then companies may conduct an interview or directly give a project work for you.

Then you need to choose a topic and submit an Abstract to the company about the Project work you are going to do.

In some cases the Company providing the project will give the topic on which you should do the project.

Either ways submitting Abstract is the next step what one should do.

So what is an Abstract, what should it contain

An initial Abstract should contain

Introduction and Background
Research Methodology

Introduction and Background: - In introduction and background, first you give the introduction of the topic on which your project work is based on, for example if your project is on "Portfolio Management" you will give the definition of Portfolio Management, importance of it etc or if your topic is Capital Structure or Ratio Analysis, you do the same, you again give the definition of Capital Structure or Ratio Analysis and define the importance of the topic. So whatever may be the topic you should give the definition and importance of it in this section.

Then you Define the scope of the study, it contains like how many days you will be working on this project and how much data you could collect from the company or how many years data you have taken into consideration while giving a conclusion to the project etc.

Then you define the objectives of study, here you define the main objective of doing this project, for example if your project is on Capital Structure, you objective would be finding the Capital Structure of the Company, and the reasons for it and the pros and cons of that capital structure to the company. If your project is Ratio Analysis, then finding the financial health of the company through Ratio Analysis will be your objective. If portfolio Management is your project, Calculating the risk and return of individual stocks compared to the overall portfolio risk and return will be your objective, so based on the topic your objective will be changing.

Then finally you define the limitations of study, like how much limited data you are going to use and what would be the impact of that on the project, how much time you are spending and what would be the impact of that on your project

Research Methodology: -Here you are going to explain how you are planning to get the required data for your research, either from persons like employees of organization or from books, journals, articles, internet etc.

If you are getting data directly by interacting with the persons then it is called as Primary data

If you are getting data from other sources that from indirect methods like internet or other printed stuff then it is called Secondary data

So once prepare an Abstract with all above details, you need to submit it to the Company as well as to your Project Supervisor in your college or university, once both of them approves, then you start doing the project

How the next steps in project starts and other details we'll discuss in next post.
